PR 298: POA COMMENT ON THE JUSTICE COMMITTEE REPORT INTO “ENDING THE CYCLE OF REOFFENDING”

Commenting on the outcome of the Report from the House of Commons Justice Committee into “Ending the Cycle of Reoffending” Steve Gillan, General Secretary of the POA said:

“This is yet another Report on the crisis in our Prisons. The Justice Committee has confirmed what the POA has been telling the Government for years - overcrowding, staffing shortages and the appalling state of the Prison Estate is having a major impact on the ability of Prisons to deliver the education and rehabilitation courses that help turn around the lives of offenders”.

Mark Fairhurst POA National Chair added:

“This Report lays bare the appalling cuts to Prison Education budgets. How are we supposed to end the cycle of reoffending if budgets for this important part of prisoner rehabilitation are being cut by up to 50% in some cases? The Government is in complete denial about the impact these cuts have on recidivism”.
