Robert Stitt has dedicated nearly 40 years to the Scottish Prison Service, demonstrating unwavering commitment, integrity, and leadership.

From his early days working with young offenders, to mentoring new recruits and enhancing family engagement within HMP Dumfries, Robert’s influence has been profound. His roles have spanned discipline, physical education, control and restraint instruction, and residential care, each marked by compassion and excellence. Beyond his formal duties, Robert has played a vital role in supporting POA conferences, exemplifying dedication to his colleagues and the wider trade union movement. His legacy of service and mentorship made him a truly deserving nominee.

Robert began his career in the Scottish Prison Service in 1986, quickly establishing himself as a trusted and respected officer during turbulent times at HMYOI Dumfries and HMP Barlinnie. His calm authority and honesty helped defuse high-risk situations, including riots and hostage incidents.

Robert became a permanent PTI, mentoring young offenders in fitness, nutrition and personal wellbeing. His guidance had a measurable impact on rehabilitation outcomes, helping individuals build healthier lifestyles and self-confidence. For 18 years, he also served as a control and restraint instructor, training staff in situational awareness and self-protection, which enhanced safety and professionalism across the prison environment. In 1995, Robert was selected to lead the Gate Lodge at HMP Dumfries. His leadership included mentoring new operations officers, delivering SVQs and fostering resilience in a challenging workplace. He redesigned the visit room to include a child-friendly play area and strengthened ties with external agencies such as family liaison, making prison visits more humane and community-orientated.

As head of the security team for POA conferences, Robert also ensures smooth operations, while his support of the trade union movement reflects his deep care for colleagues and public service.

Since 2018, Robert has served in residential care, offering guidance and support to younger staff. His career reflects improvements in staff development, prisoner rehabilitation and community engagement. Robert’s legacy is one of quiet leadership, unwavering service and transformative impact.
