CIRC 039: EXPLORING CRITICAL INCIDENTS AND THE PREVALENCE OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS AMONG UK PRISON OFFICER GRADES

The research was suspended for a while as the Scottish Prison Service wanted more information before they would agree to our colleagues in Scotland taking part in the study, this has now been agreed and the link for the survey has been reopened.

The National Executive Committee are keen for this to be a success as currently there is little to no published research on the development of PTSD among UK prison officer grades. This means that very little is known about how the incidents prison officers deal with at work might impact upon their mental health and how to prevent this.

By taking part in this research you will help in the understanding of PTSD and the experiences of prison officer grades, potentially contributing to the development of prison policy and training around staff wellbeing and responding to critical incidents and identifying any gaps in the provision of support services.

Research participants may also find personal benefit in contributing to the project, to be able to turn a difficult experience into something that increases awareness of the mental health needs of prison officer grades.
