POA Circular 105/2020 was recently promulgated and highlighted the successes that our legal provider, Thompsons Solicitors had achieved for our members in 2019. In that year £4.5 million was paid out to our members in compensation for a range of claims.

Each year at Annual Conference, a report is promulgated to branch officials for circulation after Conference to the wider membership at each Establishment and Secure Hospital in England and Wales. The Legal Aid Committee have completed a piece of work which has shown that the £4.5 million paid to our members in 2019 is the highest figure paid for 10 years. The compensation figures for the last 10 years are as follows;

2010 £1,866,057

2011 £1,610,497

2012 £2,349,583

2013 £2,194,656

2014 £3,066,799

2015 £3,002,166

2016 £1,785,738

2017 £1,518,724

2018 £1,928,348

2019 £4,501,000

These figures reflect the increased issues in the workplace (particularly violence) and they also indicate a willingness by POA members and POA local branch officials to challenge issues which affect our members’ health and safety.

These are impressive successes for our members by our legal providers. The total compensation paid to our members over that period is just short of £24million. The POA will continue to support our members through our Legal Aid Scheme with Thompsons and those Barristers appointed to get the best outcomes for our members claims. These figures do not include compensation in Northern Ireland, Isle of Man or Scotland where the Legal Aid Committee intend to produce a Circular outlining those successes over the last 10 years.

Yours sincerely
