General Secretary

The POA might have been hard-hit by anti-union legislation, but Steve Gillan is confident that, with a new strategy, it is well placed to defend and protect its members

COLLEAGUES, AS I WRITE THIS ARTICLE ON 8TH MARCH 2018, POA MEMBERS AT HMP LINDHOLME WALKED OUT AND REFUSED TO RETURN TO WORK IN THE DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES THAT THEY REASONABLY BELIEVED TO BE IMMINENT AND SERIOUS.

STEVE GILLAN, POA GENERAL SECRETARY, REPORTS THAT ALL TOO OFTEN AT POA HQ, WE RECEIVE CONTACT FROM A LOCAL BRANCH OFFICIAL INDICATING THAT A MEMBER IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND AT A POLICE STATION TO BE INTERVIEWED BY THE POLICE UNDER CAUTION, FOLLOWING AN INCIDENT AT WORK.

Representing over 30,000 Prison, Correctional and Secure Psychiatric Workers, the POA is the largest UK Union in this sector, able to trace its roots back more than 100 years.
