POA Press Releases

209 25 Oct 2019

Official figures today show that the prison population stands at 83,795 in England and Wales. This is 486 more than the same week twelve months ago.

Steve Gillan, General Secretary of the POA stated:

“In 2010, the then Coalition Government promised a rehabilitation revolution and that has failed miserably. They then announced recently through the Prisons Minister Lucy Fraser, that they now need Victorian prisons because of the prison population, but this morning the Ministry of Justice has stated this doesn’t include Dartmoor prison. Our prisons are in crisis and it would appear policy is being made up and announced on a daily basis.”.

Government policy was to have new for old prisons but that now appears to be shelved. The POA have officially written to the Secretary of State, Robert Buckland QC MP for clarity in relation to the Prisons Minister’s Parliamentary Committee statement where it was stated Victorian-era prisons were still needed. At no stage did the Minister exclude HMP Dartmoor from that statement.
