The General SecretaryDecember 2007 PROUD TO BE IN UNION AT LASTThe reverberation of our Unions action on the 29th August 2007, were felt not only throughout the Labour and Trade Union Movement in the United Kingdom, but our unity and strength of purpose sent a message to Trade Unions throughout the world. The POA's standing as a free and independent Trade Union has never been higher in our history, than it is today. But this is no time to sit back and languish in our historic achievement. This Government and the Prisons Board appear to be expecting a Strike at any time and are seeking to prepare for confrontation. The POA, its National Executive and Membership has always believed that the threat of industrial action should be used to bring the Employer to the negotiating table, rather than disrupting the lives of so many people by Strike Action. So the message is clear – Give this Union back it’s Rights – pay our members a decent wage – engage with this Union on the issue of Criminal Justice and secure mental health policy – or once again, you will feel it’s strength. We will drag you in the Courts of Europe, make you answer questions in the European Parliament and in the House of Commons and House of Lords. Your threats and intimidation mean nothing! They are an irritant and will not stop us achieving our aims. To each and every POA member and their families through their support, you have proved to yourself and our society that you are no longer prepared to be overlooked, ignored and trampled under foot. Let 2008 be a year of consolidation and advancement. The POA must now ensure that we engage society at every level. Unity is Strength and united we will win. Congratulations to Steve Cox on his re-election as Vice Chairman and may I wish The union says a fond farewell to Ron Adams who has left the NEC following his medical retirement. I would like to wish him and his family a trouble free retirement. Happy New year to all POA members and their families.
