Union Members Threatened With Sack

Members of the POA are being threatened with disciplinary Action by the Director General of the Prison Service for wearing a trade union badge.

The Prison Service is in crisis as it struggles to cope with a prison population which is spiraling out of control and the Director General is spending tax payers’ money to attack POA members over the wearing of a badge.

Colin Moses - National Chairman of the POA said:

“This union is being asked to enter into modernisation, save 3% of the prison budget year on year and the Director General is concerned about a badge. If any member of the POA is disciplined for wearing a trade union badge, this union will “strike”.

My members are being assaulted on a daily basis. Prisoners are being transferred from prison to prison, the public are being placed at risk, as unsuitable prisoners are being sent to open jails as the service try to cope with the current crisis. But, what is the Director General concerned about, staff wearing badges”.

Brian Caton – General Secretary of the POA said:

“It is clear to this union that the Prison Service is engineering a dispute, so that they can ask the courts to shackle the POA and run the Prison Service. Mr Wheatley and the Prisons Board are not fit to run the Prison Service and we will be calling on the Government to resolve this situation and remove them from office.

The Prison Service is in crisis and morale amongst prison staff is at an all time low. This union took action on 29th August 2007 and since that day the Service seem to be on tender-hooks waiting for the POA to take further action, that day is drawing ever closer.”
