Press releasesREF: PR/46/07 DATE: 10th September 2007 To: ALL POLITICAL PRESS RELEASE Union's Dismay at Brown's Policy on Public Sector PayLeaders of the POA were disappointed at the contents of the Prime Ministers speech, at the TUC Congress today in Brighton. Colin Moses, National Chairman of the POA said, “It is wrong for public sector workers pay to be eroded year on year to uphold the economy. The Government must look at the work that my members perform everyday. Prisons are extremely violent places to work in and on average, a Prison Officer is assaulted every three hours. I am sure that my members will be disappointed and angry at Gordon Brown’s dogmatic approach to public sector pay.” Brian Caton General Secretary said, “We are still hopeful that an agreement will be reached with the Prison Service and Government, during our planned talks over the next few weeks. Be under no illusion if the resolve is not achieved, this Union will carry out the mandate of its members and further industrial action may be necessary.” “The members of the POA are fed up to the back teeth at being used as bargaining chips to uphold the economy. Our prisons are full, new prison places are needed, but most importantly staff are required to ensure prisons are safe, decent and secure. At present, the Prison Service cannot recruit enough staff because the terms and conditions are inadequate and people will not join the Service. All we ask for is a fair deal.”
