Press releasesREF: PR/33/07 DATE: 11th June 2007 To: ALL POLITICAL PRESS RELEASE One Year On - Union Learns Celebrates its 1st BirthdayLeaders of the POA attended the first birthday Conference of Union Learns at Congress House, TUC Headquarters in London. The Conference was addressed by Alan Johnson, Secretary of State at the Dfes who praised the work and achievements of the trade union movement and union learn representatives in delivering education to workers throughout the United Kingdom. The work of trade unions in encouraging workers of all ages to access education and training has been paramount in the development of life long learning. Brendon Barber, General Secretary, TUC informed Conference that whilst the achievements to date have been significant, we have only scratched the surface. Steve Gough National Vice Chairman and Project lead for POA Learning said: “I am extremely proud of the work and achievements of the staff directly employed by the POA, and those who are seconded from the Prison Service and NHS Trusts. These members of staff ensure we deliver access to a range of courses and qualifications including improvements to individual’s essential skills. The work of the POA has been recognised by the TUC with 2 members of staff being presented with the Skills for Life Advocates Award at today’s conference”. Colin Moses National Chairman said: “The future of workforce reform and modernisation has to be built on education and training. I am proud of the work that the POA has achieved in encouraging public sector workers and their families to access learning across the prison estate. However, more needs to be done to ensure key functional skills are made available to everyone associated with the criminal justice system”.
