David Davis Addresses POA Annual Conference 2007

David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary for the Conservative Party, addressed the POA’s Annual Conference at Southport today, despite pressure for him to remain in London.

Mr Davis placed on record his vision for the Prison Service under a Conservative Government. It is clear that a Conservative Government will be tough on crime. They intend to tackle the problems related to drugs, prison overcrowding, re-offending, education, prison regimes and prison absconds.

Colin Moses, National Chairman of the POA, said -

“This was the first time that a Shadow Home Secretary from the Conservative Party has addressed a POA Conference for more than 20 years. I am pleased that the Conservatives are prepared to listen and engage with this union, something that the current Home Secretary has failed to do. It is pleasing that they recognise that we are on the same side, a side that has to protect the public. We hope that they provide the necessary prison places and staff to deliver the changes to education and structured regimes to address re-offending, but not at any cost.

No Government can privatise their way out of a prison crisis. Public services have to remain public.”

Brian Caton, General Secretary, said –

“The problems within society stem back to the Thatcher years. If we are to deal with drugs within society and prisons, then we need to ensure that individuals’ illnesses are dealt with by the correct professionals and prisons should not be used as warehouses.”
