Press releasesREF: PR/29/07 DATE: 22nd May 2007 To: ALL POLITICAL PRESS RELEASE Shadow Home Secretaries Address POA ConferenceDavid Davis and Nick Clegg the Shadow Home Secretaries to the Conservative and Liberal Democrats Party will address the POA’s 68th Annual Conference at The Floral Hall in Southport on Wednesday 23rd May 2007. When asked why have the POA requested the Shadow Home Secretary to address the POA’s Conference, Mr Moses said “This Union has worked under a Labour Government for ten years. During this time there has been a significant lack of capital investment in the prison system and it is clear that this country needs new prisons, more prison places to ensure that we can deal with the increasing prison population. The Prison Service has forced more and more efficiency savings across the prison estate, resulting in prisoner to staff ratios rising. This Union is not affiliated to any political party and will work with any Government to ensure that prisons deliver safe, secure and decent regimes.” Brian Caton, General Secretary of the POA said “Lord Carter predicted that the prison population will reach ninety-three thousand by 2009. We believe that if the current trend continues and significant investment is not made to deliver new prison places then prisons will return to the dark days of the late eighties/early nineties and serious disturbances will occur. This union stands ready to engage with the Government of today, or any future Government, to seek a resolve to the crisis which the Prison Service is currently facing.”
