Record Prison Numbers

Leaders of the POA expressed anger and disappointment as the record number of prisoners held in custody has been announced today.

Colin Moses, National Chairman of the POA said:

“On the eve of our Annual Conference where the prison crisis and prison population are high on the agenda, record numbers of prisoners are currently being held in overcrowded and understaffed prisons. This Union has been calling for action for several years and whilst we welcome the recent announcement that new prison places of 8000 are to be brought on line; this is too little, to late and therefore we have no option but to condemn the Government and Prison Board for their lack of forward planning and investment in the prison system. We can only hope that the justice Ministry takes urgent action to ease the problems of overcrowded prisons and obtain the necessary resources to cope with the ever increasing prison population”.
