Press releasesREF: PR/10/05 DATE: 26th May 2005 To: ALL POLITICAL PRESS RELEASE Dear Colleagues Director General Of The Prison Service Addresses POA ConferenceAt the Prison Officers' Association Annual Conference on the 26th May 2005, in addressing the Conference Phil Wheatley the Director General said: “Last years performance was the best ever on escapes, control and drugs. The Service exceeded all resettlement and reducing re-offending targets by a comfortable margin. Most importantly we reduce the rate of suicides. This was in the face of high population, tight funding and with a major change on the horizon.” He went on to state: “The Home Secretary’s new approach on Market Testing was a real achievement, one that he and the Association must develop fully.” Colin Moses, the National Chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association welcomed his comments and recognition to staff for a job well done especially in light of the prison population running at 24% above operational capacity. He went on to say: “There was much work to be done. Our members are committed to change; hopefully the Prison Service and Home Secretary will work diligently with our members to achieve change and long and lasting improvements in the Prison Service.” END.
