RIOT ON BLAKE WARD AT ASHWORTH HIGH SECURITY HOSPITAL IN MAGHULL, MERSEYSIDE

Reports of a serious riot at Ashworth Hospital in Maghull, Merseyside appear to suggest that the incident was as a direct result of the hospitals total ban on smoking.

On Monday 28th July a serious disturbance occurred on Blake Ward, the admissions ward for patients with mental health problems.  The incident has resulted in the loss of accommodation and could have escalated but for the timely intervention of staff.

Ashworth Hospital detains some of the most dangerous and damaged people from society, including Ian Brady who has resided at the hospital for many years.  This incident must be taken as a warning for the authority.

Brian Caton General Secretary of the POA said:-

"The staff at Ashworth and in all our secure hospitals face a difficult and challenging job everyday. The events of yesterday came as no surprise to the union because the patients in our care are extremely vulnerable. Any change will always bring risks and whilst the smoking policy has been handled well other planned changes to staff attendance systems, and security measures may result in further disturbances. The POA call for urgent talks with the authority to avert any re-occurrence of last night and to ensure the hospital provides safe, secure and decent conditions for staff and patients alike, whilst protecting the public”.
