PRESS RELEASE
NO EMBARGO

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND IMMIGRATION BILL

On Tuesday 6th May 2008 the House of Commons will consider the amendments to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill made in the House of Lords.

The POA fully supports Lords amendment number 173 that would make further provision for Parliamentary scrutiny of Police and Prison Service pay.

This amendment would mean that if the Government does not intend to implement the recommendations of the Police Negotiating Board or Prison Service Pay Review Body recommendations in full, they will be required to bring the matter before the House of Commons for approval.

Brian Caton, POA General Secretary said:

“The POA is committed to the restoration of full trades union rights but firmly believes that for as long as these human rights are denied to our members, any fair minded Government should be bound to honour any mechanisms they impose.  For the Government to do otherwise would show that it is predisposed to the continuation of adversarial industrial relations with the POA and Police Federation”.

Whilst the Government opposed this amendment at third reading in the House of Lords, the POA urges the Government to reconsider their opposition when this sensible proposal comes before the House of Commons this week.
