POA CONVENE SPECIAL DELEGATES CONFERENCE

Representatives from every prison throughout the United Kingdom, will arrive at the TUC, Congress House in London tomorrow for a Special Delegates Conference to discuss three issues.

  1. Section 127 – the banning of POA members taking industrial action by New Labour,
  2. Industrial Relations, and
  3. Budget Cuts.

Colin Moses, National Chairman of the POA said;

“It is not very often that we convene a Special Conference, but, this union has to address these key issues immediately.

“The re-introduction of Section 127 by New Labour will be another broken promise to this union and the trade union movement and will lead to unrest amongst my members.

“Due to the imposing of a below inflation pay award and the staging of pay for 2007, this union will demand that we have binding arbitration on Pay and Industrial Relations, as prescribed by the ILO (International Labour Organisation).

“This union is currently in dispute with the Prison Service and Government over the 60 million pounds worth of savings that is being imposed on the Prison Service year on year.  These draconian cuts will lead to more violence in prisons, more drug abuse, more self inflicted deaths and self harm and the public being placed at risk.

“Whilst the Government may believe it can ignore this union and introduce anti trade union legislation, rather than establishing a true partnership to deal with the real problems that the Service faces today and in the future.  The use of the Courts to try and smash this union is simply not acceptable.  We need a root and branch review of the sentencing policy and use of prisons. New Labour should stop the spin and introduce policies to protect the public from those that are the most violent in our society.
