Press releasesREF: PR/04/08 DATE: 11th February 2008 To: MPs PRESS RELEASE POA FACE FURTHER COURT ACTIONThe POA are today back at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, at 12 noon in Court Room 21, as the Government and Prison Service tries to impose their will on the rights of POA members in England and Wales. On the 29th August POA members in England and Wales took part in the first national strike of the union’s 69-year history. This was as a direct result of the Government staging their pay following the recommendations of an independent Pay Review Body, an award that was significantly below the rate of inflation. Colin Moses National Chairman of the POA said: “Once again, this union is the subject of legal proceedings as the Government and Prison Service conduct industrial relations through the courts. “The Lord Chancellor for the Ministry of Justice appears to have abandoned his socialist values and principles to embrace the Thatcherite anti trade union laws. “New Labour has failed to deliver the promises to this union by not restoring our trade union rights as promised whilst in opposition. “This union may well be subjected to a court injunction and if that is the case we will take stock and look at the next course of action, to protect our members’ fundamental human rights. “If New Labour thinks it can force this union into change by reintroducing draconian anti trade union legislation then it is sadly mistaken. “This union and its members must be treated fairly and with respect otherwise the goodwill of all prison staff may well be withdrawn.”
