Thompsons Solicitors

The POA is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Thompsons Solicitors to provide members in England and Wales with the full range of legal services until May 2010.

Thompsons is a law firm with a long and as proud a history of fighting for trade union and workers’ rights as the POA.

With 25 offices across England and Wales and 4 associated offices in Scotland and Northern Ireland, Thompsons is the most experienced personal injury and trade union law firm in the UK.

Founded in 1921, Thompsons has always worked and campaigned with the labour movement to promote social justice both in the UK and internationally. The firm has a reputation for fighting hard to secure the maximum amount of compensation and for taking on and winning cases.

Unlike most other law firms, Thompsons has a principle of never acting for employers or insurance companies. POA members can therefore be confident that their legal service is provided by a law firm genuinely committed to them as trade union members and working people.

Thompsons has won a number of landmark legal cases on personal injury, health and safety and employment rights issues. These included the establishment of employers’ liability in asbestos claims, bringing the original industrial deafness test cases, winning the first work-related stress claim, winning test cases on employment and pension rights and fighting all the way to the European Court to establish the right of trade unions to expel members of the British National Party.

Thompsons’ criminal lawyers too have an un-matched record for defending people accused of work-related crime.

With Thompsons’ network of offices, POA members will benefit from first-class legal services throughout England and Wales. Members will be interviewed at the firm’s regional offices, ensuring convenience and access for members up and down the country.

Thompsons has extensive experience of representing prison, correctional and secure psychiatric workers in legal cases including inquests, criminal prosecutions, personal injuries, employment cases, and criminal injury claims.

The POA has already begun instructing Thompsons in new cases and arrangements are being made to transfer existing cases from Lees Lloyd Whitley. The union is confident that the transition to Thompsons will be seamless and that members will immediately benefit from a first-class legal service.

This initiative will be reviewed in May 2010 when the union will consider whether to agree an extension to this or make alternative arrangements.
