POA SUPPORT CONCERNS BY HM CHIEF INSPECTOR OF PRISONS FOLLOWING UNANNOUNCED INSPECTION OF HMP/YOI FELTHAM (FELTHAM B YOUNG ADULTS)

Leaders of the POA call on HMPPS and Government to act, as more criticism is aimed at the Prison Service following another damning report identifying that violence is out of control in prisons.

This report is critical despite some good work being carried out by staff across many areas of the prison. This inspection found that the young men being held there were living in an unsafe environment and were often afraid for their own safety and since the last inspection there had been a significant increase in violence.

The POA said;

“The situation at Feltham has only been maintained because of the excellent work of staff, without their intervention on a daily basis the levels of violence could have resulted in someone losing their life”.

According to the Inspectorate the response to this increase in violence had been ineffective with no coherent plan in place to address the issue. They go on to say that the violence at Feltham is often serious, and one should not underestimate the risks faced by staff on a daily basis.

It is also reported that during the course of this inspection an officer was seriously assaulted, and there were many examples shown to the inspection team of large-scale fights which could easily have led to tragic consequences but for skilled and courageous intervention by staff.

When asked to comment on these statements Steve Gillan General Secretary of the POA said;

“These statements come as no surprise to the Union. We have seen a 30% reduction in staff in the last eight years and on average 19 Prison Officers a day are assaulted. The facts speak for themselves.”
