Ashworth Hospital to take strike action

The POA membership have voted overwhelmingly for strike action and action short of strike action in support of two nurses who were dismissed for restraining a violent patient. The strike ballot was 92.3% in favour and 97.1% in favour of action short of strike action.

Steve Gillan General Secretary of the POA which represents psychiatric workers at Ashworth Secure Hospital said;

“POA members are outraged at the decision of Mersey Care Trust to dismiss two nurses Kevin Gregson and Peter Hilton for defending themselves in a violent situation where another nurse had been head butted causing serious injury. Responding to an alarm both nurses used reasonable force. It is ironic that the patient was convicted of several assaults against nurses in the incident and had to pay compensation yet Mersey Care Trust sacked our members even although the Police stated they had no case to answer. I have viewed the CCTV of the incident myself and I am astonished that 2 brave nurses were dismissed because a violent patient made a complaint. When the facts of this case come out the general public will be appalled and rightly so”

Mersey Care Trust have today been informed of the outcome of the ballot and a meeting on Wednesday 28th October 2015 will determine when the strike action will take place, with the likely scenario of an initial 24 hour strike to take place on Friday 6th November 2015 after the notice of industrial action has been served on the employer.
