MINISTRY OF JUSTICE FIGURES ON PRISON OFFICER RECRUITMENT IS MISLEADING THE GENERAL PUBLIC

The Ministry of Justice are massaging Prison Officer recruitment figures, which gives a massively false impression of successful recruitment into a Prison Service that has been decimated by budget cuts over a number of years and remains in crisis.

Steve Gillan General Secretary said;

“I welcome any increase in Prison Officer numbers but let us be very clear this
increase does not undo the damage of years of cuts.  In March 2010 there were
19,908 Prison Officers and as of 30thDecember 2017 there were 16,592 a cut of 3,316 Prison Officers (16.7%).  Further in March 2010 there were 7,698 Operational Support Grades and as of 30thDecember 2017 there were 4,422 a cut of 3,335 (43.3%).
In reality there has been no increase in numbers and the pay and terms and conditions have been cut significantly since 2010”.

The POA call on Government and the Ministry of Justice to stop misleading the General Public.
