PETITION:- MAKE IT A SPECIFIC CRIMINAL OFFENCE TO ASSAULT AN HM PRISON OFFICER

Following the publication of POA Circular 3/2017 members will be aware of the tragic circumstances in which Prison Officer, Nick Medlin, lost his life on Christmas Eve 2016.

Since that time, we have seen the publication of the latest damning statistics on the levels of violence POA members see day in day out whilst working behind the walls and fences of establishments across the UK.

On 23rd January 2017, Nicks sister, Andrea Gray created a Parliamentary Petition calling on Government to “make it a specific criminal offence to assault an HM Prison Officer”.

The National Executive Committee ask all POA members to add their names to this petition, to show their support for Nick’s family and their colleagues across the country. Members should be aware that if this petition can get to 10,000 signatures, government will be required to formally respond to it. Should it gain 100,000 signatures, Parliament is required to consider the issue for debate in the House of Commons.

Please add your name, and encourage family and friends to sign it as well using the link:

Can I thank members in advance for the support, I am sure you will all help in getting as many signatures as possible on this petition and again show Members of Parliament that Prisons are not and will not become the forgotten public service again.

Yours sincerely
