USE OF POELT’s AWAITING A PLACE ON A TRAINING COURSE

It has been drawn to the attention of the Executive that NOMS and some Governors are using or considering employing and using POELT’s as OSG’s whilst awaiting a place on a future training course.

OSG’s and Officers have different terms and conditions and job descriptions and this practice is contrary to these and PSI 42/97.

If a Governor or NOMS wish to employ individuals who have been successful in applying to become a prison officer and are awaiting a placement on the next or future POELT course there are procedures in place to allow them to do so, but they can’t be employed as a prison officer under training and redeployed to cover OSG duties.

If your Governor is considering this practice local officials must challenge this and if necessary, a local dispute raised.

This policy is not acceptable and if it is being considered or is in place at your establishment the local Branch Secretary must inform their NEC representative immediately.

Thanking you in anticipation of your support and co-operation.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
General Secretary
