SERIOUS DISTURBANCE AT HMP MOORLAND

Once again we have seen a serious disturbance this time at HMP Moorland on Sunday 20th November 2016.

We know that there was extensive damage to ‘A’ Wing on Houseblock 2 that included fire damage, water damage, cell damage along with other damage to staff offices, cameras and lights.

The damage I am sure would have been far worse had it not been for the courage, professionalism and dedication of those who work at HMP Moorland and indeed those Tornado Teams. On behalf of the Executive I pay tribute to our members who not only dealt with this situation brilliantly, but also to our members at receiving establishments who dealt with the aftermath in receiving 37 prisoners that were transferred out of HMP Moorland.

It is disappointing that for all the wrong reasons the Prison Service are in the media and it should not be left to the Trade Union to correct those headlines that ‘Riot Police” restore order, your Employer should be putting out along with the Secretary of State Liz Truss corrections and praising dedicated Prison Officers who volunteer to give their time up in dealing with riot situations.

Once again, on behalf of the NEC thank you HMP Moorland and the Tornado Teams for your professionalism.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
General Secretary
