Russ Woodfield is a serving Prison Officer and POA member currently undertaking PhD Research with the University of Huddersfield, into the Mental Health of Prison Staff.

In support of this research and supported by the NEC, Russ has submitted the following request:

I am kindly asking for participants to complete an online survey, the survey is completely anonymous and no personal information regarding your identity will be recorded. This is completely independent research of my own undertaking and has in no way been commissioned by NOMS.

The survey is designed to investigate your current mental health and work related stress levels.

I am intending to use the findings to highlight the plight of Prison Officers under current working conditions through independent publications and also to help raise public awareness, ultimately to provide a further means to effect change in our working conditions and practices.

If you would like to assist me in this simply click on the qualtrics link below and follow the instructions,

The survey is open to all Prison Staff and Staff who work in Secure Psychiatric Facilities (all grades / roles etc.) and who currently work or have worked with prisoners in the past.

My contact details are contained within the survey link if you have any questions or concerns regarding the research please don’t hesitate to email me directly and I will gladly answer any questions you may have.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Please draw the contents of this circular to your members and ask them to assist in this research which will have long term benefits to POA members as we seek to improve the publics’ understanding of the difficult and demanding role you undertake on behalf of society.

Yours sincerely

Deputy General Secretary
