SMOKING IN PRISONS

As you are aware the POA has been campaigning for all workplaces to be free from the harmful effects of second hand smoke for our members since 2007.

NOMS commissioned Parsons Brinkerhoff to conduct air quality tests and their report can be found via the following link. www.gov.uk/government/publications/air-quality-reports

At para 5.1.4 of the recommendations the report states, “In light of the scientific evidence of the health effects of exposure to SHS and the data on exposure of prison staff in England and Wales to SHS presented in this report the National Offender and Management Service (NOMS) should consider implementing measures to further reduce or eliminate SHS within the prison estate.”

At the National Executive meeting on the 9th December 2015 the NEC determined that they would advise all members to inform Governors of their wish to work in a smoke free environment.

Members should advise Governors of their concerns and request to work in a smoke free environment. If your request is refused the NEC advise members to enter into the grievance procedure.

Please draw the contents of this circular to the attention of all our members.

Yours sincerely
