Harvard Trade Union Programme - Scholarship, 4th January - 14th February

With regards to the above, it gives me great pleasure in informing the POA membership that our General Secretary Steve Gillan has been selected to attend an intensive six week training programme for trade union leaders, which is comparable to the advanced education that Harvard University offers to Executive level individuals in Business and Government. It teaches the essential skills for the management and leadership of unions and provides a unique opportunity to explore key issues for the labour movement.

The programme will see some of the leading professors and academics give lectures and tuition to approximately 30 to 40 trade union leaders from countries including the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia, South America and Europe.

The National Executive Committee are pleased that our General Secretary has been chosen to attend this programme which will provide an ongoing benefit to the POA in the coming years.

The scholarship funding is provided jointly by the TUC and Harvard University at a cost to them of approximately £13,000 which includes tuition, accommodation, books and study materials.

The General Secretary will still be contactable whilst at Harvard and will continue to maintain overall control of the administration of the POA. Day to day work will be administered by the Deputy General Secretary Andy Darken and Assistant General Secretaries Duncan Keys, Joe Simpson and Glyn Travis.

I am sure that you will join with the Executive in recognising that this is a magnificent opportunity for Steve and indeed recognition of the role of the POA within the wider trade union movement.

Yours sincerely
