Oral evidence to the Prison Service Pay Review Body

On the 5th of December 2013 members of the Executive gave oral evidence to the board of the PSPRB in London as part of this year’s pay round.

The Chair of the board Dr Peter Knight thanked the POA for their written submission and accepting the invite to address the board and respond to their questions.

The focus from NOMS in respect of pay is compression, progression and the Governments directive that pay should be capped at an average of 1%. Again, NOMS used the results of the annual staff survey to highlight that pay was not one of the key factors for staff as they try to justify their proposals.

The POA put forward a strong argument to justify our pay claim and demanded that ALL staff receive a consolidated pay award. We reminded the PSPRB that they were part of a compensatory package and it was not their job to encourage members to sign into F&S or do the bidding of Government. We again reiterated our anger and disgust at last year’s recommendations from the PSPRB and asked them to rectify their mistakes this year. The Executive have emphasised the differences for operational and non-operational staff and put forward arguments to increase the 17% unsocial pay element.

This is a further part of this year’s pay talks and we await further communications from the PSPRB.
