Recount of workplace ballot in respect of the Memorandum of Understanding

Following the promulgation of POA Circulars 127/2013, 128/2013 and 130/2013, and the concerns that were brought to the attention of the National Executive Committee in respect of the national return, the scrutineers and tellers have conducted a recount and verified the ballot result.

Myself and the Deputy General Secretary commissioned some investigatory work on Monday 12th August 2013 and ordered a re-count, which took place on the 14th August 2013. I would like to thank the scrutineers and tellers for their efforts and commitment.

As part of the re-count and verification process, the scrutineers and tellers upheld their original decision to exclude some returns and after fully investigating all branch returns, the result was as follows:

Number of ballot papers issued 9774
Number of ballot papers returned 7756
Number of ballot papers in favour 4246
Number of ballot papers against 3480
Number of ballot papers spoilt 30

As a result of the concerns raised during this ballot by members, the administration of the Union will review the process for completing workplace ballots in the future and if necessary issue further guidance to branch officials.

I will be writing to all branch committees who failed to provide a return and ask for an explanation.

This ballot has been conducted in accordance with the Rules and Constitution and the National Executive Committee are content that the re-count was conducted impartially and now provides a final determination in respect of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Please draw the contents of this circular to your members attention.

Thanking you in anticipation of your continued support and co-operation.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
General Secretary
