Announcement by the Secretary of State for Justice

The Secretary of State for Justice Mr Chris Grayling made a statement in the House of Commons today, in relation to Electronic tagging and prison contracts.

In relation to HMP Northumberland, the contract has been awarded to Sodexo. The National Executive Committee do not believe that any prison should be privatised, but we will work closely with Sodexo and our membership in HMP Northumberland to ensure their terms and conditions are secured under TUPE arrangements and that our members are treated fairly in what has been a traumatic time for them during the bid process.

Unfortunately, in the case of HMP Moorland, HMP Lindholme and HMP Hatfield there is more uncertainty because the announcement has been put back, due to Serco agreeing to an independent forensic audit, in respect of allegations of financial irregularity on a Government contract appertaining to Electronic monitoring.

The National Executive Committee will be raising this issue with the Secretary of State, as it is totally unacceptable to treat our members in this manner.

We will keep you updated in respect of any developments in relation to this matter.

Yours sincerely

General Secretary
