Health & Safety: Smoke Free Prison Estate

Many of you will be aware that the POA has been actively trying to change the current policy which since 2007 allows the vast majority of prisoners to smoke in prisons, the workplace of POA members.

PSI 9/2007 which sets out the current Prison Service policy does not give adequate protection to workers.  The POA has written to the Minister responsible for prisons and copied this to the CEO of NOMS, Michael Spurr.

We have attached a copy of this letter for your information and we ask you to give a copy to your Governor.  Also attached is a template letter which all members should send to the local occupational advisor, details of which should be obtained from the local management, if they are exposed to second hand smoke whilst at work.  There is also a template letter which should be completed and forwarded to the Governor.

It is the view of the NEC that these letters should be sent on a daily basis if any worker is exposed to second hand smoke.

Finally, the Executive once again urge all members to follow the instructions as set out in PSI 9/2007, even though we recognise that it does not provide adequate protection, it is the only document members can rely on.

Yours sincerely
