Security & Custody: Arrest of individuals as a result of civil unrest between 6th & 10th August

At the NEC meeting on the 24th August 2011 members of the Executive reported that some offenders who had been arrested were subject to tagging.

As you know the Government and NOMS continue to report the success of releasing prisoners on a tag or the use of tagging as an alternative to a custodial sentence.

In an attempt to establish the level of offenders who were arrested and subject to tagging the Executive would be grateful if branch officials could collate the numbers arrested and forward the information to the General Secretary’s office as a matter of urgency.

The Executive also agreed to raise a parliamentary question on this issue to support any further debates or negotiations.

Clearly the use of electronic tagging impacts on the prison population and we must ensure that all alternatives to prison are fit for purpose and provide effective safety for the public.

Thank you in anticipation of your support and co-operation.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
General Secretary
