Civil Unrest and Riots

I am sure that you are fully aware of the civil unrest that has occurred in many major cities during the past 4 or 5 nights.  As a result of this anarchy and civil unrest the police have made a significant number of arrests and many of those individuals could face a period of time in custody.

The Coalition Government have made provisions to set up special courts to deal with those charged with offences and as a result prisons could now be receiving offenders from these courts throughout the day and night.

The National Executive Committee has determined that we are fully supportive of assisting NOMS during this difficult period of time.

In an attempt to manage this exceptional situation NOMS has determined to open some receptions on an extended basis.  They will also need to manage the prison population to ensure prisons remain stable and safe.

The National Executive Committee would encourage all members to assist the Service by staffing receptions and transferring prisoners, whilst ensuring prisons remain safe, decent and secure.

The Executive are aware that Gold Command is open and staff are being asked to work additional hours for payment to deal with the operational requirements.  It is vital that local committees engage with Governors to ensure all additional work is covered appropriately with the necessary resources put in place at each establishment.

This situation is constantly under review and it has been agreed that the National Chairman and I will contact the Minister Crispin Blunt to discuss this issue and formally offer our support.

Thanking you in anticipation of your support and co-operation.

Yours sincerely

STEVE GILLAN
