District Meetings 2010

At the NEC meeting on the 25th August 2010, the Executive determined that the District Meetings would not take place this year, due to a number of external factors that the union must engage in, as we attempt to protect Public Services with our sister unions.

The Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) will be announced on the 20th October 2010 and this will confirm the budget cuts planned by the Coalition Government and attacks on all Public Services.

The TUC are organising a mass meeting and lobby of politicians on the 19th October 2010 at the Central Methodist Hall in London, to raise public awareness on the effects of the CSR, impact on the welfare state and public services in general. The Executive intend to maximise attendance of POA members at this event and will debate this at the NEC on the 8th September 2010, further information will be promulgated in due course, on this issue.

The TUC have also asked the POA to send a small delegation to the European Trades Union Congress in Brussels on the 29th of September 2010 as part of the overall strategy. The Executive will determine the delegation and seek nominations in due course, once the final figures have been determined.

The NEC will undertake an extensive programme to visit all branches to deliver key messages and provide vital information on the unions strategy, that of the TUC and our sister unions, as we challenge the CSR and planned budget cuts of the Coalition Government. The POA as part of the Public Services Liaison Group, continue to work on short, medium and long term strategies to challenge the CSR and budget cuts.

The Executive recognise that district meetings have not occurred since 2007 and had every intention to convene them this year. However, they believe the money and time can be better utilised in supporting other events and ensuring members are provided with appropriate funds to cover their out of pocket expenses, as we demonstrate this unions opposition to budget cuts that will make our prisons more dangerous and destroy the welfare state as we know it.

We trust that you understand the decision of the Executive and thank you in anticipation of your full support and co-operation on these key events, which will impact on every POA member and their families.
