Leaders of the POA were advised yesterday that HMP Bedford has been placed in Special Measures by HMPPS following a number of critical reports and serious incidents.

Bedford prison has been in the spotlight for months following a riot and unprecedented levels of violence.

Leaders of the POA resorted to legal action and issued Government and HMPPS with a Pre-Action Protocol Letter in April in an attempt to address the serious failings. Despite this and more promises from the employer that things were improving this decision comes as no surprise to the POA at local or national level.

Leaders of the POA said, “Staff at Bedford have been badly let down by Government and the employer.

The consequences of the failings at Bedford have impacted on the local community and other emergency services.

This decision is too little too late and another example of inept management failing to act decisively.”

When asked what happens now?

Leaders of the POA said, “We await the local action plan and response to our concerns and legal challenge.

We will continue to support our members and demand change to bring stability and safety back to Bedford Prison.”
