Message from National Chairman - Issue 297th February 2008 Dear Colleagues PAY REVIEW BODY RECOMMENDATIONS 2008 The Pay Review Body has today announced its recommendations for Prison Staff in respect of Pay for 2008. I have to say that I am appalled at the recommendations and condemn those who completed the report. The Prison Service is the first in line of all public services and will undoubtedly set the tone for 2008 in respect of pay. I can only hope that all public sector workers unite and challenge this Government over their attitude towards trade unionists pay. I can only see unrest amongst the members as once again the majority of staff will not receive a pay award, against the backdrop of inflation currently running at around 4.0%. The majority of POA members will be approximately 6% worse off in real terms compared to inflation figures for the last three years or in real terms £1500. Jack Straw has said, The Government will accept the recommendations, I am not surprised. These recommendations will cost the Service/Government 29 million pounds. However, we have to save 60 million pounds this year and the same for the next two years. Now that is what I call “robbing Peter to pay Paul” The Pay Review Body has again tried to divide this union with Pay. A little pay award for those at the top, and bottom of the pay scales and nothing for those in the middle. This is wrong and has to be challenged
All of these points have been missed or ignored, why, because everyone is committed to driving down the pensionable pay of prison staff. This union will ballot its members in line with Annual Conference Motion 30/2007 on the Pay Review Body’s recommendations and the membership will decide whether to accept or reject this disgraceful offer.
